"Throughout my life, being a Professional Artist is where my heart's compass always landed me."
Since the age of three, Mary L. Hoffman has always been drawing and painting and knew without a doubt that when she grew up she’d be a professional artist.
As her artistic skills developed over the years, Mary became best known for her portraiture art. Portrait commissions helped finance her college studies at The Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland Ohio where she earned her BFA in 1989.
For the past 30 years, CEO’s, Universities and collectors from all over the world have commissioned Mary for her elegant Oil Paintings and Charcoal Portraiture.
Mary taught Life Drawing, Portrait Painting and Basic Drawing classes a few weeks of the year and continued her Portrait business.
But it was in 2005 when new life breathed into her artistic abilities after attending her first Plein Air landscape painting workshop. The Plein Air addiction began and she soon became a part of a small painting groups in her area
Today, Mary enjoys combining her love of the portrait and figure with painting Plein Air landscapes and Still Life Studio work. She travels painting and teaching workshops and Plein Air paint-outs all over the United States.
Mary resides with her husband and two children in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mary will take you through each stage of creating a plein air painting, from choosing a subject right through to completion with demonstrations and plenty of encouragement and guidance.
Some of the key areas the workshop will include: dynamic compositions, tonal values and color mixing, soft and hard edges, loose and fresh brush work and how to make everything relate and harmonize in your painting.
At the end of Mary’s five day retreat workshop, students will come away with a greater understanding and experience of how to approach a plein air painting from start to finish plus the next steps required for their own plein air journey. Mary delivers an informative yet relaxed retreat. She is friendly and enthusiastic and has a lot to share from her years of being an artist.
