As a former teacher in local, low income schools, I have a strong passion for continuing to help make an impact in the lives of children in the Charleston community.
I had the opportunity to showcase my work at Ro Sham Beaux on King Street this past October. I decided that I wanted to use a portion of the proceeds to sponsor a local, Title l student for winter art camp at the Gibbes Museum of Art here in town. Thanks to the collectors of these featured paintings, I was able to do just that.

Not only did I have the privilege of offering a child an experience that he may not have otherwise been given, I was able to get to see this little artist in action first-hand as his art camp teacher.
It did not take long for me to realize why his art teacher at his downtown Charleston elementary school chose him as the recipient of this sponsorship. He was very in tune to each lesson and his artistic skill and interest was evident right away in all of our projects.
Check out these organic shapes! They're so much like the ones Matisse cut from his bed late in his career as he battled cancer which kept him away from painting outdoors.
I love that this little artist is holding his brush at the tip, as instructed, in order to paint big, expressive brush marks like Charleston's beloved Betty Anglin Smith.
Several art campers got distracted by the cute puppy dogs and birthday cakes that they found in local magazines. But not this little guy! He listened closely during our lesson and he knew to find items that represented things of interest in Charleston for his collage... like oysters!

Chelsea Goer oyster painting without some paint drippings in the background?
This was my third art camp with the Gibbes, but my first of many sponsorships! There's not much more that gives me the joy of creating for a deeper purpose such a sponsoring a local child for art opportunities.
And then there's this little guy! I adored sweet Judah in my first grade class back in 2013. I am forever grateful for his mom, the CFO of the Gibbes Museum. She was kind enough to recommend me to the Curator of Education at the museum upon learning of me closing my classroom door in the public school system. It was a surprise initial connection that she knew could blossom into a long-term partnership between the children's education department at the museum and myself.
She was right and I look forward to more art camps this summer!
