Third Time's a Charm: Field & Flow with Richard Oversmith

With so many canceled events for 2020, I was determined to keep my planned retreat with dream instructor, Richard Oversmith, on the calendar for October. Not only did we keep it on the calendar with our small group of 8 students, but it was the best one yet! The weather was perfect in McClellanville allowing for lots of time out painting and hanging on the screened in porch at our retreat home, the Dupre House.

Richard started us off with a fantastic demo of the 1000 year old oak tree along the main road of town. The light that he captured in the Spanish Moss was truly incredible.

McClellanville is a tiny shrimping town located about 45 minutes north of Charleston. Painting the shrimping boats is a must. Richard demonstrated painting the light and shadow side of this white boat so brilliantly.

The clouds above the marsh and the boats docked along Jeremy Creek were subjects for more of Richard's engaging demos.

Our retreat home is the oldest home in McClellanville established in 1790! There are lots of historic homes throughout the village which make for more interesting subjects.

We keep the group size small so that the featured instructor has plenty of opportunities to make it to every student several times each day. It turns out that our small group size works best for a world pandemic too as it was easy to safely distance ourselves. Whew!

This screened in porch is truly the best for hanging out after paint time, critiques by the instructor and game time after dinner.

Lowcountry Boil is always a favorite meal at our all inclusive retreat and I can't say enough good things about our fantastic natural wine selection from Monarch Wine Merchants in Charleston.

McClellanville is a plein air painters dream setting. I love watching students create a variety of Lowcountry paintings throughout our 4 days and build new friendships along the way.

I am grateful for Richard and these 8 students who decided that they also needed a fun event on their 2020 calendar. We truly pulled off the best retreat yet... third time's a charm!!
